Town Hall Hermoupoli

The Town Hall of Hermoupolis was built between 1876 - 1891 and is the work of the architect Ernestos Ziller.
Its construction began on January 11, 1876.
The building was financed both by public and municipal funds. At first, a strong contraversion existed with regard to the heavy expenses of the building project. Local newspapers wrote: "This construction demands a degree of grandeur which is unsuitable and out of all proportion with the current situation of the city and its needs."
Numerous problems, arising during the construction, resulted in changes of the original design. It is only thanks to Ziller's perseverance that the building presents an architectural unity.
In 1891, the Municipality of Hermoupolis moved into the building and hired out some of its rooms to the Court of First Instance and to the Court of Appeal.
Its construction was finally completed thanks to the persistence and zeal of mayor D. Vafiadaki , who died in 1898. In its central part, the facade is boldly defined by the Tuscan- and Ionian-style columns and pediments of the entrance, while its corners are shaped like towers. Of special value is its interior decoration with the frescoes as main feature.
A central corridor leads to a vast hall surrounded by six columns in Dorian style. On both sides are two spacious rooms. Two peristyles run along the left- and right-hand sides of the building. These are essential to the general layout of the building and are in turn adorned with arches. They house the Court's Offices. An interior staircase leads to the second floor, where the municipal offices are situated. The second floor features a glass roof. All the rooms are of simple design; only the meeting hall is richly decorated.
